Background: The recently developed Borderline Personality Feature Scale for Children (BPFS-C) is currently the only dimensional measure of child and adolescent borderline personality and the English version of the measure has been demonstrated to have promising psychometric qualities. In light of the potential utility of this measure for research and clinical purposes, validation of the French translation is a priority in order to extend the use of the BPFS-C with French speaking adolescents.
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the French BPFS-C in 394 adolescents and young adults recruited from the community.
Method: Participants recruited from school and a tertiary institution completed the Million Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI), the Beck Youth Inventories (BYI), the Child Behavior Checklist-Youth Self-Report (CBCL-YSR) and the Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children (BPFS-C).
Results: The results indicate that the total scores of both the long and short version of the French BPFS-C provide good indicators of the presence of borderline personality disorder features. The findings of an exploratory structural equation model indicate that affect regulation, identity, relationship difficulties and self-harm are closely inter-connected, rather than distinct factors. As expected, the total scores of both long and short versions of the BPFS-C were significantly correlated with borderline personality when assessed with the much longer MACI, as well as internalizing and externalizing difficulties.
Conclusion: The findings confirm that both long and short versions of the French BPFS-C have good psychometric properties and that the total scores can be considered reliable and valid indicators of borderline personality disorder traits in adolescents and young adults.
